Infineon leads the development of three electric car projects: let more electric cars go on the road in Europe

January 15, 2021

Munich, Germany , June 10, 2015 – Brussels, Belgium – The European Commission is launching three new research projects aimed at making Electric Vehicles cheaper, more efficient and more reliable, thus driving more electric vehicles to Europe. Street. Through these projects, Europe will continue to develop and produce electric vehicles. The three research projects were led by Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) with a total investment of about 67 million euros, which was unveiled at an international event held in Brussels from June 9th to 10th. It will continue until 2018. A total of 120 researchers from 70 partners in 15 countries participated in the event, as well as representatives from the ECSEL Joint Action, the European Union, the European Commission and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Electric cars are lighter and have a longer range

The development of these three research projects (3Ccar, OSEM-EV and SilverStream) will make the electric system of the electric vehicle about one-fifth more compact and lighter than the original, and the cruising distance is farther, and the cost is reduced by about a quarter. The three major projects will cooperate with each other to jointly develop environmentally friendly, safe and reliable electric vehicles. From chip manufacturers to automakers, the entire automotive value chain will contribute to this.

Electronic components and semiconductor components in electric vehicles are on average about 50% larger than internal combustion engines. Therefore, they are more complicated. In addition, electronic components in electric vehicles have longer working hours. The 3Ccar ("Integrated Complexity Control Component") research project aims to further enhance the reliability of automotive systems to meet the needs of increasingly complex vehicles. A total of 48 partners from 14 countries participated in the 3Ccar project, which has a research budget of 54 million euros.

The OSEM-EV ("Electric Vehicle Optimization and Systematic Energy Management") project will increase the cruising range of electric vehicles. The project's 12 partners will focus on intelligent thermal management, including cooling systems for electrical drives, battery life and efficient energy regeneration. The research budget for the project is 8 million euros.

The SilverStream project aims to develop compact electric vehicles at lower prices. A total of 10 partners from 5 countries have joined. The research budget for the project is 4.5 million euros.

3Ccar, OSEM-EV and SilverStream rank among the 12 most important research projects in Europe

In the European ECSEL program (European Electronic Components and Systems Leading Joint Program), the European Commission and EU members have selected 12 research projects for key promotion, with a total investment of about 710 million euros. German companies and research institutes participated in 10 projects, including 3Ccar, SEM-EV and SilverStream. Through the ECSEL program, the EU aims to significantly increase the global market share of European microelectronic components.
